Need of the hour

Many young people visit our hospital everyday with Specific musculoskeletal diseases.

Many young people visit our hospital everyday with Specific musculoskeletal diseases pertaining to Generation I . Spectrum of generation specific diseases range from thumb pain to heel pain. What’s happening and what is not happening let’s have a walk thru the cyber gateway:-

Text thumb

Eight out of ten people now a day’s use a smart phone. I hope all of us accept that we ABUSE or DISUSE it rather than using it. The average time many of us spend on a mobile is more than 8 hours a day. We find many young people coming to the outpatient department with pain in and around thumb. Small muscles and fine muscles of hand have large area of representation in brain than large muscles of knee and hip. When these small muscles and tendons are used over a small smart device it causes both physical strain on tendons and mental fatigue. Research proved increased incidence of Dequervains and stenosing tensynovitis attributed prolonged smart device usage.
Text neck

The most common complaint we hear in the outpatient department. Yes we were taught in our medical schools about cervical spine degeneration and its impact, but those days it was always in relation to patient of age above sixty. Now we see young patients between ages 15 to 45 with recurrent turn ups at outpatient with neck pain. The cause is multifactorial.

Most of our work today is sedentary. We work a lot of time sitting before screens, speaking to a lot of people, meeting a lot of people. From days of “body moves and neck rotates” to today’s “neck moves and body rotates”. Our head is supported by bare cervical musculature which has to bear whole weight of the brain and calvarium which causes severe damage to neck musculature that results in neck pain.

Sun exposure

Sun exposure if prime factor for bone and tendon health, Sun exposure is natural remedy for most of psychiatry disorders. “ fifteen minutes of sun exposure over arms and face three times a week will supplement Vitamin D for a whole week” does it happen ? The only time when we stay out is only when we travel. Our homes and workhouses barley have natural sunlight exposure. Most of the travel in modern days is by car or metro or a cab. Yes, we use bikes but we use stockings and helmets. It’s time to question “Are we getting even five minutes of sun exposure every day??”

Cabby knee or Commute knee

No doubt most of today’s commute happens in cars. We specifically noticed medial joint cartilage damage in young people under fifity year’s age pertaining to prolonged car driving. Cab services and their drivers who drive in thick traffic almost 8 hours a day have major cartilage injury over medial articular cartilage. The mode of transmission and posture of the driver while driving are attributed to this injury.

Desk Back

How many of us suffer from back ache? The answer is most of us. Causes for back ache are innumerable. But most common cause of backache in young people are few like posture, sun exposure, hydration and activity. We need to make postural adjustments and move often around in office for back to be healthy. There should be adequate sun exposure for our tendons to hold spine and maintain posture. Renal stones also cause backache which focuses on adequate hydration and decent diet habits to avoid them. There are various modalities of treatment in backache.

Its need of hour for all of us to think about our health and lifestyle.
  • Adequate sun exposure
  • Follow good posture at work place
  • Regular simple exercise
  • Healthy diet
  • Gadget holidays
